Course Description: Focus on basic vocabulary; conjugation in present, present progressive, preterite, future tenses; structure of Spanish; introduction to Hispanic cultures.


Material required: A $15.00 fee, two-inch binder, filler lined paper, different color highlighters, 1 set of divider tabs, pencils, pens, 200 index cards (standard size), 1 quart gallon Ziploc bag, 1 set of ear buds or headphones.. Students are also required to sign up with Duolingo, a free language learning program/App. (we will do this in class).

Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students are expected to have: 1. Basic understanding of language structure 2. Knowledge and understanding of cultures of the Hispanic world.


This course is designed for students who have little or no Spanish language skills. This course is designed to develop the four skills in Spanish language learning: listening comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading. You will have the responsibility of practicing listening comprehension and speaking on your own with the aid of the audio, video, and online recording programs. Your grade for the course will be based on various tasks that incorporate all of these skills. In addition to the four skills of Spanish language learning, you will also learn about Hispanic culture through reading and video assignments.


Tentative sequence of topics:


Etapa preliminar:

Greetings, farewells, introductions, numbers, the alphabet. Introduction to culture.


Unidad 1:

Etapa 1: familiar and formal greetings, subject pronouns, days of the week, months, useful phrases to make small talk.

Etapa 2: Definite and indefinite articles, ser, cognates, plural forms, gender of nouns. Cultural information.

Etapa 3: descriptive adjectives, vocabulary on items of clothing, sentence structure, tener, expressing how you feel, describing people’s physical attributes. Cultural information.


Unidad 2:

Etapa 1: Numbers, possessive adjectives, time, vocabulary on family, verbs and conjugation, expressing frequency, vocabulary on school-related items. Cultural information.

Etapa 2: buildings vocabulary, “ir” to express where you are going, personal “a,” conjugation of regular verbs “ir” and “er.” Vocabulary on commonly used verbs. Cultural information.

Etapa 3: Gustar, vocabulary on food, ser vs. estar, feelings, present progressive, expressing obligation, vocabulary on professions, irregular verbs. Cultural information.


Unidad 3:

Etapa 1: Geography lesson, parts of the body, stem-changing verbs. Cultural information.

Etapa 2: vocabulary on animals, the weather, comparatives, superlatives, ordering food, vocabulary on food. Cultural information. Cultural information.

Etapa 3: reflexive verbs and pronouns. Cultural information.


Unidad 4:

Etapa 1: the preterite, chores vocabulary, prepositions. Cultural information.

Etapa 2; future tense, giving directions. Cultural information.

Etapa 3: review of all tenses studied. Prepositions. The imperfect. Cultural information.
